Community Supported Agriculture


Brandon and I picked up a bushel of vegetables at the Market Square Farmers Market for my coworkers who are part of a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. They are on vacation, so they let us pick up and keep all of the veggies. Brandon and I have been thinking about getting a CSA share next year, and this was a great way to get introduced to the program and figure out how much you get and how to use the veggies in your weekly share.

We got the vegetables from A Place of the Heart Farm (from Pioneer, TN), and in our share we received:

  • Sweet potatoes
  • Kale
  • Butternut squash (a huge one!)
  • Popcorn
  • Garlic
  • Mustard greens
  • Sweet peppers
  • Radishes
  • Arugula
  • Potatoes
  • Celery
  • Hot peppers
  • Lettuce mix
  • Greens mix
  • Head lettuce
  • Asian eggplants
  • Pears

When you break down the cost of investing in a CSA (which is around 25 weeks of locally grown produce), each weekly share is approximately $25. Mountain Meadows Farm, the CSA next to A Place of the Heart, does 5-week subscriptions for $125. I can easily spend $125 for a week’s worth of produce from EarthFare. It’s amazing to think that you can get so much of your food from a local farmer at such a good price.

We’re so excited to eat all of the vegetables from A Place of Heart. Last night’s kale was so green and flavorful. The potatoes tasted better than ever. And for lunch today, I made my usual Chinese vegetables and tofu dish and used up all of the celery. The stalks were skinnier, but the celery packed in more flavor than the bagged up stuff you get at the grocery store.

I can’t wait to use up everything that came in this week’s share. The best part is cooking with veggies that I’ve never used before. I have no idea how to use butternut squash, but thanks to a few cookbooks and the Epicurious app, I think I have a few recipes in mind.
